Students Are At The Center Of The Hay Challenge

An eight-figure gift from the estate of the late William E. Hay (MBA ‘66, DHL ‘06), a DePaul alumnus and former trustee, made possible the Hay Endowed Scholarship Challenge. Working to bridge the racial divide

In 2020-21, DePaul took steps to strengthen anti-racist practices and policies throughout the university. We revised our mission statement to ensure the principles that guide us would lead toward a more inclusive future. Faculty and staff participation in our diversity certificate program, known as BUILD, increased by more than 500%. DePaul enrolled the most students of color in university history, including a record number of Latinx students. As an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution, DePaul formed a task force to explore what we can do to better assist Latinx students succeed and graduate. The university also awarded the inaugural Emmett Till Scholarship to Mari Oliver, an undergraduate student majoring in African and Black diaspora studies with a minor in public law and political thought. We created this new scholarship in memory of all Black lives lost to racial violence. We will continue to work together, as one united community, toward systemic change.
