University leaders launched Now We Must: The Campaign for DePaul’s Students — an accelerated fundraising effort focused on helping students during the pandemic.
The John Horan Endowed Scholarship was established following a generous $5 million gift from DePaul Trustee Jennifer Steans and her sisters, Robin and Heather. The scholarship program will cover the cost of attending DePaul for students from North Lawndale College Prep High School.
DePaul University alumnus and Life Trustee George L. Ruff (BUS '74) and his wife, Tanya S. Ruff, have made the mission of the university central to their lives. As a demonstration of their commitment and generosity, the Ruffs made estate and monetary gifts to DePaul totaling $21 million to support the university’s Institute of Global Homelessness and scholarships. In recognition of their gift to the IGH, the institute has been renamed the George and Tanya Ruff Institute of Global Homelessness.
An eight-figure gift from the estate of the late William E. Hay (MBA ‘66, DHL ‘06), a DePaul alumnus and former trustee, made possible the Hay Endowed Scholarship Challenge. With funds contributed by generous DePaul donors for scholarships matched by Hay, the university established more than 100 new endowed scholarship funds to support student needs across the university.
This 2020-21 challenge raised a record-breaking $3,458, 491 to support initiatives that help students maximize their full potential. To celebrate, Billy Blue Demon made his way out of the vault and appeared on a collection of apparel items available exclusively at the Spirit Shop.

Inspired by global movements to reinforce social justice values, the new mission statement fortifies the commitment of the university to produce graduates who will be change agents for good in their communities.
In October, DePaul President A. Gabriel Esteban introduced the State Scholar Plus initiative, designed to give financial support to high school students of exceptional promise. Qualifying students must rank in the top 10% of their graduating class and earn a minimum 3.75 GPA to qualify for assistance over four years.
The DePaul University community remembers two exceptional leaders
In Nov. 2020, DePaul Board of Trustees Chair Lori Holland passed away at the age of 63. Holland was a retired managing director of the investment firm Neuberger Berman, and a longtime volunteer and supporter of DePaul.
Benefactor of the Richard H. Driehaus College of Business at DePaul, Mr. Driehaus was an internationally celebrated investment pioneer known for his charitable gifts to the university and his staunch commitment to student success. He passed away in March at the age of 78.

In 2020-21, DePaul took steps to strengthen anti-racist practices and policies throughout the university. We revised our mission statement to ensure the principles that guide us would lead toward a more inclusive future. Faculty and staff participation in our diversity certificate program, known as BUILD, increased by more than 500%. DePaul enrolled the most students of color in university history, including a record number of Latinx students. As an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution, DePaul formed a task force to explore what we can do to better assist Latinx students succeed and graduate. The university also awarded the inaugural Emmett Till Scholarship to Mari Oliver, an undergraduate student majoring in African and Black diaspora studies with a minor in public law and political thought. We created this new scholarship in memory of all Black lives lost to racial violence. We will continue to work together, as one united community, toward systemic change.
