Located in the heart of America’s third-largest city, DePaul students, faculty and staff are deeply immersed in the life and culture of Chicago. For the members of our diverse, inclusive and multifaith community, making a positive change in the world often starts right here at home. In 2020-21, that meant moving on multiple fronts to help those most affected by the pandemic.
In May, the Board of Trustees appointed Sherri Sidler as executive vice president. Sidler had been serving as interim executive vice president since January. In her 15 years at DePaul, she has been responsible for financial reporting and analysis, development of university-wide budgets, as well as the oversight of financial and budget systems.
In January, DePaul named Brian Sullivan as its next treasurer. Sullivan joins DePaul from Veolia, a Global Fortune 500 company and leader in the water, energy and environmental services sectors.

DeWayne Peevy, one of the most admired and respected leaders in college athletics, joined DePaul as director of athletics after a 12-year run at the University of Kentucky. Tony Stubblefield, new men’s basketball head coach, came to DePaul after spending the previous decade as an assistant coach at the University of Oregon. He is regarded as one of the most astute basketball coaches and recruiters in the country.

In response to legislation and NCAA rule changes that allow student athletes to be financially compensated for the use of their name, image and likeness, DePaul announced the creation of LEGACY. The program offers comprehensive brand development, providing training on applicable rule changes, as well as ways for student athletes to assess and strengthen their personal brands.
Guided by our core values and an urgent need to help others whenever possible, DePaul students found ways to support the enterprises they love during the pandemic. Some entrepreneurial undergraduates even started businesses of their own.
Despite the pandemic, student journalists at The DePaulia continued to produce a print edition for their readers while adhering to the university’s health and safety guidelines. “The students really wanted to do this. They feel that a physical copy of the paper has a greater impact than a website,” says Marla Krause, faculty advisor to the newspaper.
DePaul’s Students Against Incarceration book club with Cook County Jail inmates faced challenges due to the pandemic, but members and supporters continued to make the experience possible remotely. A silver lining to the club’s remote format was an increase in membership. Previously, only 10 DePaul community members and 10 inmates could participate. By operating remotely, with all exchanges happening via email, the club has been able to double in size.
Business undergraduate Lauren Pingad started Fashion Masks with her mother, So Hui Nye, a staff draper and technician in The Theatre School. Knowing how COVID-19 has affected employment for people in the entertainment industry, the duo recruited Theatre School alumni who studied costume and production design to produce the masks.
From small student films to virtual comedy festivals, DePaul’s theater faculty produced more than 25 independent projects during the 2020-2021 year for captive virtual audiences.
In June, DePaul welcomed the Class of 2021 to a graduation celebration on the Lincoln Park Campus. More than 2,200 graduates walked across a commencement stage, took photos with family and guests at several decorative sets, and experienced a simulated balloon drop in a 360-degree photo booth.
